What Is a Job Posting?

Job postings are advertisements for job openings that let potential applicants know what position a business has available. They include the job title, duties, qualifications needed, salary range, and how to apply. Unlike internal job descriptions used to manage hiring and HR, job postings are written to attract.

What Is a Job Posting?

Job postings are job announcements made by employers to the public. These are not the same as job descriptions, which are used internally to manage hiring and other HR operations. The purpose of a job posting is not to inform — it is to attract.

Job postings live on company career pages, job search websites like Indeed and LinkedIn, and social media platforms. The tone is candidate-facing; the goal is to convert qualified readers into applicants.

US Compliance Considerations

Anti-Discrimination Laws

Job advertisements must comply with federal and state anti-discrimination laws, including the Civil Rights Act Title VII, the ADA, and the ADEA.

Salary Range Disclosure

In several US states — notably California, New York, Colorado, and Washington — including a salary range in job postings is mandatory.

Inclusive Language

Audit for gendered terms, age indicators, or requirements that could screen out protected groups without legitimate business justification.

Internal vs. External Job Posting

Many US companies post internally first — typically for 5–7 business days — before going external.

Job Posting vs. Job Description

These two terms are used interchangeably but serve different purposes:

What a Job Posting Should Include

An effective job posting includes:

  • Title of the job position
  • Summary of the job
  • Top key responsibilities the role requires
  • Qualifications required to do the job well
  • Estimated salary or pay range — increasingly mandatory in US states like California, New York, and Colorado
  • Location and work arrangement — remote, hybrid, or on-site
  • Application process for applying
