* Estimates only. Applies 2026 federal brackets, the 2026 Social Security wage base, and the latest published state income tax rates for a salaried employee taking the standard deduction. Actual withholding varies with W-4 elections, local city taxes, credits, and state disability/paid-leave contributions. Consult a tax professional for advice.

A salary offer is never the amount you actually take home. Between federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA, a meaningful slice of every paycheck is withheld before it reaches your bank account — and how big that slice is depends heavily on which state you work in. This salary tax calculator does the math for all 50 states and DC, so you can compare offers, plan a move, or simply understand your paycheck.

How the Salary Tax Calculator Works

Enter your gross annual salary, choose your state and filing status, and the calculator applies four layers of tax to estimate your net pay:

  1. Federal income tax — 2026 IRS brackets (10% to 37%) applied to your taxable income after the standard deduction.
  2. State income tax — the rules for your selected state, whether that is no tax at all, a single flat rate, or a full progressive bracket schedule.
  3. Social Security — 6.2% on wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
  4. Medicare — 1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

Pre-tax deductions lower your tax

Money you contribute to a 401(k), HSA, or FSA is subtracted from your salary before income tax is calculated. Enter your annual pre-tax contributions to see how much they reduce your total tax and raise your take-home pay.

Gross Salary vs. Net (Take-Home) Salary

Gross salary is your total pay before deductions — the number on your offer letter. Net salary (take-home pay) is what remains after federal tax, state tax, and FICA. On a $100,000 salary, take-home pay ranges from roughly $70,000 in a high-tax state like California or New York to over $80,000 in a no-income-tax state like Texas or Florida — a difference of $10,000 or more per year for the exact same gross salary.

Why state choice matters

State income tax is the single biggest variable in your take-home pay. Two people earning identical salaries can see thousands of dollars of difference purely based on where they live and work. That is why the state selector is the most important input in this calculator.

State Income Tax at a Glance

States fall into three groups. Use this calculator to see the exact effect on your salary, but here is the high-level landscape:

TypeHow it worksExamples
No income tax Zero state income tax on wages Texas, Florida, Washington, Nevada, Tennessee
Flat tax One rate on all taxable income Georgia (5.19%), Illinois (4.95%), Colorado (4.4%)
Progressive Rate rises through income brackets California (1%–13.3%), New York (4%–10.9%), New Jersey

What This Calculator Does Not Include

To stay accurate across every state, this tool focuses on income tax and FICA. It does not include local city or county income taxes (which apply in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, and New York City), or employee-paid state programs such as disability insurance and paid family leave. Where your selected state has such a program, a note appears directly under the results so you know the estimate is conservative — your real take-home pay would be slightly lower.
